Global Policy
The impacts of industrial animal agriculture—on animals, people, and the environment—extend beyond geographic boundaries. Our global policy program advocates policies within intergovernmental organizations, such as the United Nations, to support a just and sustainable food system.
Why Global Policy Matters
Global policy provides a powerful avenue for creating systemic and global change for animals by encouraging intergovernmental organizations to support a plant-based, more sustainable food system. It also influences national policies and, increasingly, local and corporate policies.
How We Work
Mercy For Animals’ global policy program advocates sustainable food systems within intergovernmental processes, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
With food systems responsible for a third of all human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, climate policies must take a holistic approach—addressing every stage from production to consumption.
Our global policy program advances policies that support plant-based eating as a critical climate solution.
Who We Work With
Mercy For Animals believes that meaningful international policy engagement necessitates a strategic and collaborative advocacy approach. Our experience has shown the tremendous value of working with coalitions and partner organizations to drive lasting change.
Mercy For Animals is a member of the Food & Climate Action Group, Climate Action Network International, and the World Federation for Animals.
We are also an accredited observer organization with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the United Nations Environment Assembly, as well as a partner of One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme.
Past Work
Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) Under the Paris Agreement
Food systems are responsible for one-third of human-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and must be robustly addressed in forthcoming NDCs.
The Ramsar Convention and Animal Agriculture
Since the early 2000s, there has been increased interest from scientists and policy experts alike on the profound impacts of industrial animal agriculture on the environment.
